On Hiring Bloggers and Open Source Developers

Phil Haack has a post On Hiring Bloggers and Open Source Developers. I guess that I have no choice but to +1.

And if you get the joke, I would like to hire you.

In a recent inteview I had a candidate that had serious issues with:

  • Writing an INSERT statement
  • Reversing a string
  • Searching google*

* That is a skill that you need to have. If you are searching for Reversing a String in C# and you manages to go to the only example I C in the page, that is a major minor point.

You would not believe (or maybe you would actually) how many candidates I've screened who don't either A) go to Google, or B) go to MSDN to look up documentation...that makes the "no hire" decision that much easier.

Instead of an INSERT, I like to ask candidates to write a small demo app that makes use of at least one join statement...I don't care if they have to use BOL to do it, but it's surprising how many folks can't even write a simple join.

I get the +1 and I would love to work for you, but my wife and my mother-in-law have vetoed my suggestion of moving to Isreal.

Do I have to reverse the string in place? in C#?

ROTFL.
No, you merely have to capitalize it. In Ook#
